“Social democracy” is usually interpreted as “democratic socialism,” and people like Sanders themselves interchange the two. I don’t think many understand the difference between government control of the economy and government provision of philanthropy — including many who favor free markets. One problem is that we have a word for government control over the economy — socialism — but we don’t have an agreed-upon term for government provision of philanthropy. I suppose one could call it “welfarism,” but here in the United States we like to pretend that things like Social Security and Medicare for retired people aren’t really welfare, while practically identical problems for poor people are.
