The flaw in that analogy is that nobody ever had to learn another language to know how to speak their native language. Languages are acquired, not learned in the same way as painting, writing poetry, playing an instrument, wiring a house with electricity, plumbing, or computer programming.
I don’t know about you, but I rather insist my electrician be well educated in how electricity works and the proper way to wire a house. Artists are artisans, and they need to know how to do things properly. We have simply grown to accept that any kind of garbage can be art because some self-appointed, self-proclaimed artist proclaimed it to be. Without standards, though, art degrades into everything, and therefore nothing. Those standards can and do change, of course, but there are and must always be standards. We should be open to the fact that “That isn’t art” can be a true statement.
